Box Hill Bound

Once again it has been ages since I posted anything. I basically have been both to busy to write anything and didn’t have the energy to make something seem much more interesting than it actually was.

Anyway… as most of you already know, The offers for Uni and TAFE came out yesterday. AB and I waited 45 mins for the news paper to arrive at 7/11. (Dam thing was late) and now months of waiting is over. I know what I am doing as far as education goes for next year… I got an offer for Box Hill TAFE, for the Live Production course, which is excellent news if you hadn’t already have guessed. I am now trying to find the $2230 tuition fee by enrollment day on the 24th of Jan. I’m already half way there, and my parents are lending a hand as well.

In other news I’ve been working pretty much every day for the past two weeks, filling in for our manager who has gone on Holiday. I have no idea what I am supposed to be doing because everything was explained to me in a rush. I’m on the phone every 30mins asking one of the other managers what i should be doing. Other than that it is the usual crap you get from people. Yesterday it was a women who said “Not you again” which is a fantastic answer to “how are you?” I don’t know what i actually did to this person but I hope her husband ends up paying his $1000 in Late Fees… People take renting a DVD way to seriously.

The Crusher of Souls

I can’t stand my job! That stupid video store it the crusher of all souls for anyone who ever worked there or who ever will work there in the future.

First I’ll talk about the management… or lack of. There are 3 managers who all run our tiny, shit store. There is the owner who we will call Ben. He lives and works all the way out in Shepperton. Then there is our “area manager” who shall be known only as Lee. Lee is pretty much Ben but lives closer to our store. And finally there is our store manager who will remain “unknown” for more reason than one. With three managers you would think that there would be some order to the running of the store, but thats where you and especially me are wrong. Ben hands orders down to Lee and Lee then yells them at out store manager,(Lee is a real bitch) and then our store manager will either never do it or get one of us to do it.

We get given these jobs every day, things like, rearrange tables or god forbid “overnight overdues”. This means calling up every customer that has a movie that is over one day late. These jobs usually take between 1 hour, but there is always a list of jobs to do. So one night you may be told to rearrange the retail stock, tidy some rental shelves and the overdues. This is a good two to three hours work in a three or four hour shift. There are also the returns that need to go out onto the shelves and serving customers. There is never any help when you are working a week day, there are only two staff working on weekends. And every night we are supposed to take out the rubbish, vacuum the whole store and dust the counter. If we don’t do these jobs then you get a written warning and if you get three then you are fired.

Management recently hired another staff member who was supposed to be there to fill in for any shift that someone couldn’t make it to, but this person is never available to work when we need her to. So that means they come to me cause I’m the one who has finished school and has allot of free time apparently. So me being the nice person I am say yes I can do it. But when ever I need someone to work for me there is no one is able to do it cause they all have Uni or have another job to go to.

The next thing that really pisses me off are the customers. The other day I had a customer yell at me cause I couldn’t find the disc to a movie they wanted to buy. I told them that is has gone missing and they said “this is ridiculous, why would you have the movie on the shelf if you don’t have the disc?!” The answer to that brain dead question is “I don’t know it has gone missing until someone tries to buy it!” Customers seem to think we have tracking devices on all the movies in the store and that the computer can tell me the exact location of the movie.

Here are few things for you customers to remember when hiring a movie where i work:
- Grab the case behind the original. Its not that hard!
- If you think you are better than me, you are wrong!
- I don’t care that you dropped the movie off on the day that it was due back. If you return it after closing time, even if i am still in the store it is still late so just pay the f@#%ing fine!
- instead of threatening to go to a different store, actually go there!
- If the movie is out then you should have gotten here earlier!
- It’s not my fault the disc is scratched.
- Once again PAY THE BLOODY LATE FEE
- I am not willing to get fired cause you don’t have enough money on you.
- 3 day hires are counted as new release
- When we are closed we will not let you in no matter how much you beg and shake the door
- Don’t call us every 5 minutes asking for the same movie
- When i accidently don’t give you the correct change do not insult me
- If you didn’t like the movie thats to bad.
- Read the signs. It will save you time and save me time explaining things to you.

The main thing i hate about many of the customers is they think they are better than you, and that you have to serve them and make them happy. I personally don’t care about what ever problems you have with the store. If you want to complain talk one of our three managers.

‘It’ Is On It’s Way

If your wondering what’s on its way then wonder no more… It’s Graduation. Today was the last properly structured school day for me and the rest of year 12 for ever. There are still other days of classes but not in the same way as todays ones. Todays ones followed the time table that I have had for the whole year, term 4’s classes and tomorrow’s time table are different to maximize revision time before the final exams. Graduation is just over a month away and i don’t know yet if I’m looking forward to it. I can’t wait till i graduate and never have to go to class’s for a long time but i don’t really want to leave school. It’s a difficult conundrum.

Speaking of exams, tomorrow afternoon I have my English practice exam. I’m hoping that i will do well, I don’t want to get in there and read the question and have no clue what they are talking about, especially with the part 2 essays. I hate those things. I also have practice exams in my other subjects over the next week. Sociology is going surprisingly well. I just got a SAC back on globalisation and got a 46/50 which was a surprise, i thought i was doing badly in that subject. Although that is only one section of the curriculum. Maths is a grey area… I am sick of the subject but the stuff in it is easy and there is no real reason why i couldn’t do well. Although i have noticed in my past few tests that, when I actually try and think about every answer i do worse than the tests where i would select the answer that looked closest to what was on my calculator. Theatre studies should be OK. In class today we went through the sample exam from VCAA and found that the section on stagecraft and the section on the two plays the we studied should be good. However there is still the first section, the one on acting. I can bluff my way through that section but it’s going to take allot of thought about what to actually write. Today i also had to hand in my final Theatre SAC. The quality of the work was terrible. I lost the criteria sheet ages ago and i didn’t actually understand what type of documentation i was supposed to put in the folio. As long as i get my ‘S’ for the subject then i have had some sort of success. Also yesterday was my practice solo. The Monologue is a really good one from ‘A journal of the Plague Year’. The performance was good from my point of view but Belly want “more”. So there is allot of work to do for my monologue.

While on a similar topic to exams. It was a busy day for me at school today with two events needing to be set up at once. In the hall was Haileybury’s version of “Thank God Your Here” and in Gym 1 & 2 there needed to be 900 or more exam tables set up. To make life easier for me ‘DJ OhNo’ (or what ever) set up the sound for TGYH while I was free to help Jimmy with the tables in the Gym. Now on the topic of TGYH i need to have a bitch about the organisation of school events run by students. They always manage to leave it till the last minute to tell us that they need 4 radio mics. They never give enough warning about what they need and they don’t understand the word “no”. The school doesn’t even have 4 radio mics. There is one that they can have at a moments notice and there are two that aren’t aloud to be used as they belong to the principles unit. They eventual ended up with all 3 somehow but i would have thought they would have learned their lesson the last time they asked for more than 1 radio mic.

Anyway enough of that. The exam tables was a massive job to get all of it done but thankfully there was the rest of the maintenance crew and Laura and James L to help. It took about 2 hours to get both gyms done and as usual Jimmy was thankful for the help and gave us our pay of food and drink. Once they were all setup i went to the music studio to grab the microphone and speaker, and when i got back i found that we had to turn every single desk in Gym 1 around 90 degrease because of a lack of communication. So i wasn’t in a particularly good mood this afternoon. After lunch i headed off to my last 2 classes which were uneventful. Matt and I had a conversation about who we reckoned would be the Valedictorians. We came to the conclusion that we didn’t have any clue who it would end up being.

While making my way home I made my traditional stop via the Hall, just to see what was happening and as usual there was nothing however i was annoyed to see the mess that was left at the sound desk. There was more food wrappers then what I am happy to see there and heaps of cables and equipment sitting there that should have been removed after TGYH. So i spent about 30 minuets cleaning it up before i went home and re-patching the desk after the mess that was made of it. For those people wonder why I don’t trust anyone using the equipment, its because they always leave it in a mess that I have to clean up.

Anyway, I’m off to watch ‘Summer Highest High’, Its probably the funniest show on ‘Free’ TV at the moment.
See you, Bye

I Do Have A Hobby!!!

I do have a hobby and it is Lighting and sound the mere fact that I get paid for it once in a while does not mean that it is not a hobby! I do this stuff because I enjoy it. If I get paid for a job that I do then that is simply an added bonus. I don’t demand that I get paid. If there is an event where I can do lighting or sound inside of school or outside of school then I will most likely make myself available to do it even if I don’t get payment. I don’t just do sound and light inside of school I also do it outside of school. I do favors for friends and family lending a hand when they have troubles with their audio equipment. I often convert old vinyl records to CD. I would love to help out with more professional stuff if I had the time but currently being a year 12, VCE student takes up a lot of time.

I believe that someone can be paid for doing what they enjoy. Matt says that if you earn any money from it, it your occupation but how can something that I volunteer for be an occupation. If all jobs were based on who volunteers for the job then more people would have an occupation that they enjoy.

As for Matt’s “it’s expected of you” crap, it’s not expected of me. Take house performing arts. I did the lighting for my own amusement. The event would have still happened if I hadn’t of done anything and only had house lights. No one asked me to do lights; no one forced me to do lights. Also Matt says that I get out of Saturday sport because I do this. This is only slightly true. I got out of it because of the school play and the musical not because of assemblies, not because of house activities. The school play this year was actually part of one of my unit 3/4 subjects.

Assemblies I too don’t have to do. I’m not the one who is supposed to set up the chairs, I’m not the one who is responsible for ensuring that the microphone and lights are on. The school has staff that are responsible for all that. I just do it because I ENJOY IT.

My occupation currently is a sales assistant at Video Ezy. That is my major source of income. Lighting and sound gives me a very little income. $50 for any show that I do which is not senior school based.

If you want to read the actual argument that Matt and I had on msn then click here Be warned there are allot of spelling mistakes

Political Correctness Is Going To Go Too Far…

Apparently it is now politically incorrect to be using AD (Anno Domini) and BC (Before Christ). Who was it who cared enough to have this changed to CE (Common Era) and BCE (before Common Era). Aren’t there better things to be changing in the world other than 2 letters that are put after dates in History books. All those books are now giving people the wrong information (GASP!) The people who forced the change could have used their time better on something more important such as global warming. To me that seems like a more important issue than BC/AD not being politically correct.

And another thing…Now I’m not really a religious person but I do feel that everyone has the right to practice their religion (as long as it doesn’t involve some sort of human and to an extent an animal sacrifice. Thats where I draw the line). However I don’t feel that anyones religion should be suppressed. This political correctness is going to go too far one day. One day they will probably make it politically incorrect to have a Christmas tree set up in the city or in shopping centers, remove Santa from these places as well and not allow the sale of easter eggs at Safeway or coles and what about hot cross buns hmmm? These will all have to be removed because some people don’t believe in these things. Christmas will soon become one of the most boring times of the year. All there will be to hang is Grey sheets that say “Happy”. You can’t have “Happy Holidays” because not everyone has holidays at this time of the year. Some people are still working at 7/11. You probably wouldn’t even be aloud to use “Happy”. Some people aren’t Happy. Where Will it end?

Keys Please (but without the please)

Today started out as a good day. It started with Tutor Group, which was good as it, gave me time to try and wake up. Afterward I had double sociology but the teacher was away so we could catch up on some other work. I then went to the hall during my spare period to do some other work that I needed to do. When that work was done I felt like having a drink. So off I go to the vending machine to buy my Fanta which was good but now the story gets interesting. I am making my way to the Drama/Music department, I reach for the door handle and find it locked, so I pull out my key which I was given last year for the hall which also opens that door as the two buildings are connected to each other but as I am unlocking the door a teacher that we will call ‘B’ walks around the corner and asks where I got the key. So I told him what I tell everyone who finds out about it. “Jimmy got it for me through Nada for me to use in the hall”. At this point he doesn’t seem too happy about it but I think not much about it so I go onto my next class, Theatre Studies. Half way through the lesson ‘B’ comes in and says “key” wile making that gesture with his hand that says give it to me, you know the one. So I ask why and he says that Mr, Scott doesn’t want students to have keys EVEN THOUGH SCOTT KNEW I HAD IT! But I don’t blame him as this would have never happed if ‘B’ hadn’t gone and had a cry to him about it. Anyway when he comes in demanding Belly says something along the lines of ‘What for” or something, to which ‘B’ replies “he’s got a key to the department” and Belly is staring at him with a look that means “So what” which I was happy about as there was someone who didn’t want me to give it up. He then tells me its also because stuff gets stolen from the music department a lot and coming to me to get the key off of me is was stupid it is his departments fault that stuff gets stolen. During lunch he left the door to one of the rooms wide open. People could just walk in and take stuff.
Anyway…. so I then hand him the key as there is no arguing with ‘B’ and because he’s gone to Mr. Scott there was nothing I can do.

After class I head over to Don to tell him the news and in his way I know he didn’t agree with ‘B’ but I knew that he knew there was nothing that could be done. I then went to go and see Jimmy, the person who gave me they key to see what he had to say about it. He was the same a Don. Annoyed but knew there was nothing that could be done.

So from now on I am going to be annoying ‘B’ by going to him every time I need a key to the hall. No matter what he is doing. If he’s in a class, that’s too bad for him. I’m also not going to have anything to do with ‘B’ anymore. If he wants lights for a rehearsal (which he always does) he’s not going to get them. I will do it for performances but only because Belly is in charge of that and if possible I won’t do anything else for him. I don’t even want to talk to him. What also pisses me off because he didn’t even let me try and ‘defend’ myself, he went strait to Scott, which I feel means that he doesn’t trust me. Every other teacher that knew I had a key had no problem with it.

‘Exams’, ‘Shows’ and ‘If Someone Can Prove Me Wrong’

Today was my final unit 3&4 exam. I had music industry and I think that I did all right but there were a few questions that I got wrong and there was a question that they must have pulled out of someone’s ass. ‘What is RT60?’ nobody in our class knew that answer it stands for Reverb Time and the 60 is the amount of dB.

After the exam I went and got my vest and tomorrow I’ll go and get the words ‘Tech Crew’ written in the back in gold.

After the exam I went to Castlefield to do sound for their concert. I got there and they had hired this equipment from nova and it was all working and fine. Then all the kids started doing their performances and because it was out doors it was hard to get a good level where everybody could hear. I was always being told by parents “can you turn it up?” it also isn’t easy doing sound from behind the performers, I had no idea what it sounded like out the front. Also the sound was really distorted and know one could figure out why, not even the Australian Idol guy’s Rodie and for some reason Nova set it up so that the sound would go through a mixer and then through another powered mixer, that’s just pointless why not just use an amplifier?

And finally I think it is unfair that people bitch about me being Drama Captain with out knowing all the work that I have done for the drama department. There have been those who have been really nice about it then there are those who say to me ‘congratulations’, shake my hand and leave who then go and bitch about me behind my back. I hate them most of all because why would you come and shake my hand and tell me well done and then go and bitch about me, why not confront me in the first place! Anyway if someone can prove me wrong with the amount of work I have done for the Drama department compared to other people who are apart of the drama department then they can bitch about me all they want and I won’t care, very much.

Year 12 graduation and pre senior speech night

Lat night was year 12 graduation. It was a good night and sad to say goodbye to this years seniors. the night was good from a technical stand point, nothing went wrong and it was very smooth. this years graduation song was ‘Opportunity’, a good choice. Anyway the night was good and i hope to see some of the graduates arround.

Today i had pre senior speech night but first i had a performace for boy zone thing so I do my performance for boyzone and then i have to start setting up the pre sceniour speech night, i set it up the way i was told to and then the music teacher comes long and says we have a concert band, they won’t fit on stage the way it is set up, berry nor Pant new about that so they were surprised and pissed off when i told them cause there were lots of other changes that they had to deal with. anyway i set that up then some kid says to me “where are the singers going to stand” so i said “awww for F&*% sake” Pant is now laughing about how no one has told us about anything. I also had to mic up the piano. I was told by Mr. Wallice that mr bowler said that “the piano is never to be miced up” i told them that and they gave me this attitude. Anyway all that is fixed and then night went well. there were a couple of stuff ups but not fro my point. only the audio cause some one turned the microphone for the piano off.
