I Do Have A Hobby!!!

I do have a hobby and it is Lighting and sound the mere fact that I get paid for it once in a while does not mean that it is not a hobby! I do this stuff because I enjoy it. If I get paid for a job that I do then that is simply an added bonus. I don’t demand that I get paid. If there is an event where I can do lighting or sound inside of school or outside of school then I will most likely make myself available to do it even if I don’t get payment. I don’t just do sound and light inside of school I also do it outside of school. I do favors for friends and family lending a hand when they have troubles with their audio equipment. I often convert old vinyl records to CD. I would love to help out with more professional stuff if I had the time but currently being a year 12, VCE student takes up a lot of time.

I believe that someone can be paid for doing what they enjoy. Matt says that if you earn any money from it, it your occupation but how can something that I volunteer for be an occupation. If all jobs were based on who volunteers for the job then more people would have an occupation that they enjoy.

As for Matt’s “it’s expected of you” crap, it’s not expected of me. Take house performing arts. I did the lighting for my own amusement. The event would have still happened if I hadn’t of done anything and only had house lights. No one asked me to do lights; no one forced me to do lights. Also Matt says that I get out of Saturday sport because I do this. This is only slightly true. I got out of it because of the school play and the musical not because of assemblies, not because of house activities. The school play this year was actually part of one of my unit 3/4 subjects.

Assemblies I too don’t have to do. I’m not the one who is supposed to set up the chairs, I’m not the one who is responsible for ensuring that the microphone and lights are on. The school has staff that are responsible for all that. I just do it because I ENJOY IT.

My occupation currently is a sales assistant at Video Ezy. That is my major source of income. Lighting and sound gives me a very little income. $50 for any show that I do which is not senior school based.

House Performin Arts

At school today we had house performing arts. All the houses compete against each other to see who are the best performers in Drama, Dance and music. As far as the performances go the drama was pretty funny, especial Sholto Blacks performance. The Dance was pretty boring and most of the music was crap but the day wasn’t all bad, the lights were the highlight of the show of coarse. Dale came in at around 10:30am for some much appreciated help and to drop off his hazer and smoke machine. He did say he was going to bring heaps of gls but he forgot to bring them but I got over it pretty quick.

I had been mentally planing the lights for about a month and today I was able to put my plan into action with some extras. I had a bar up the back of the stage with 8 par-cans on them with Yellow, blue, red and green gels. I then found i had some extra par cans so what I came up with pointing them at the roof with different colours in them, I thought it had never been done at school but i was wrong. Anyway the effect was excellent and finally i had some simple side light.

For a budget of what ever i could steel, borrow, find and pay for with my own money it all looked pretty good. Except i did have a complaint against me. Dale set up a fresnel behind the drummer and it made the fantastic look, I use it during the performance and i get in trouble because its too bright! Also i had a staff member annoying me because i couldn’t get the computer on the screen. I gave up and had to pass it off to IT who fixed it but the power point was useless anyway because using purple text on a black background then adding lights made it unreadable.

The Joys of Reattaching Curtains

The curtain came back to day and what a fun adventure it was to reattach it to the curtain rail. That thing is a bitch to lift. What we had to do was take it out of the bag and lay it out so that it was like a ’sausage’, lower 3 ropes and lift so that the ropes would take the massive weight while Pant tied it back on. Sounds easy but when you have 2 people in the roof lifting and one of those two people has that stupid, waxy cord stuff and another rope its very, very difficult. Anyway after allot of straining James L and I hoisted it up to the roof so Pant could tie it back onto the rail using the cougar.

While Pant was doing that I made a list of everything that was broken in the hall. It ranged from house lights to missing exit signs, doors that are falling off, doors that were taken off and never reattached, broken seats and light switches that fell of the wall while other light switches were being repaired (have no idea how that happened). It was rather a long list. There was also the foyer light that broke back when it was on fire early last year that I put out. I don’t know why it took so long to get that one fixed.

Pant and I also had a bet that the choir stands at the back of the hall used to have the same carpeting as the rest of the hall. He didn’t believe me so to the Library I went to fetch one of the old school magazines; the 1993 issues gave me the proof I needed. It was a photo and pictures don’t lie. To the hall I ran as fast as I could to bring the news and to his surprise it did used to be the same carpeting. Go me!

It Was Bound To Happen Eventually

Tonight I was oporating sound for Haileybury’s dance gala. It was an interesting night as the dancers in the school hip-hop teams and aerobics teams and such are pretty impressive. They move around really fast at some points but it is always fun looking for the person who isn’t in time with the rest of the group.

Anyway something interesting happened about and hour before the show. In our hall what we do is for productions is we hang what we call “blacks” along the walls. Blacks are basically big black curtains. it just looks better than having wood grain walls. These blacks are attached to metal poles up in the roof. so anyway one of these poles was sticking out too far and it partially covered the curtain well in the wall so when you open or close the curtain it scrapes the pole. Today that happened and someone shut the curtain and now we have a big rip up the top of the curtain. it will probably just be sewn back together but it will probably cost allot of money, everything costs allot of money, and they will probably have to take down the whole curtain.

Something About The Final Night Of The Play.

Last night was the final night for this years school play, Inheritance. Last night was probably he smoothest the play has run. Overall the play this year has been very good as everyone knew what they had to do for the production. I had a lot of fun working on this one however operating was very boring and we went though a lot of Red Bull to stay awake.

The next production is Fame and from what I’ve been told the set is going to be pretty interesting. Its supposed to be this 2 level setup made of scaffold or something.
